Raw Recap for 6/2/2003. Live from the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California.
Your Announcers are Jim Ross and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler.
We start in the arena parking lot. An SUV rolls in, door opens-The Rock has returned to Raw.
Let’s do this…
Pyros go, J.R. and the King welcome us in and get in some hype for his month’s Row-only Bad Blood PPV. We’re reminded that The Great One will be Chris Jericho’s guest on tonight’s installment of his interview show, the ‘Highlight Reel’.
We get to work. First match is a 6-woman tag: Trish Stratus, Ivory and Jacqueline vs. Molly Holly, Victoria and Women’s Champion Jazz, accompanied by Theodore Long. Fast paced affair, Ivory gets the win for her team, pinning Jazz after a facebuster.
We return to the parking lot. Car rolls in, Bill Goldberg exits, Jonathan Coachman tries to get an interview, Bill brushes him aside and enters the arena. Break.
J.R. and the King return to quickly plug J.R.’s new cookbook. We’re informed a poll is up at www.WWE.com. Question asks ‘Will J.R.’s cookbook be a best seller or a bomb?’
In the back, Stacy Keibler bitches at Test for his use of her as a human shield during his match with Booker T last week. Stacy informs him their business and personal relationship has come to an end. Test reminds her she’s contractually obligated to be his marketing director. The saga continues.
Next up, The Hurricane makes his way down the ramp for our next match-only to be attacked from behind by Randy Orton (who, J.R. quickly informs us, isn’t Hurricane’s scheduled opponent). Superhero is left lying, Randy heads to the ring, joined by World Champion HHH and Ric Flair. Nature Boy gets on the mic, cuts a wild promo putting over his companions and cutting down the man he’s scheduled to face at Bad Blood, Shawn Michaels.
HBK makes his entrance, harsh words are exchanged, Hunter challenges him to get it on then and there. Shawn is joined by Kevin Nash, they hit the ring, as does a chair-wielding Hurricane. Brief brawl sees HHH and flunkies quickly taking a powder. Break.
WWE Rewind: Test mistreats Stacy during his aforementioned match with Booker T last week.
Next match: Scott Steiner, with Stacy Keibler, vs. Steven Richards. Test, grinning from ear to ear, appears atop the stage to check out the action. Squash match sees Scott getting the win with the Novocain. Post-match Raw co-General Manager Eric Bischoff hits the ring, announces that at Bad Blood Test will go one on one with Scott, with the winner being awarded the exclusive rights to Stacy’s managerial services. Test and Big Poppa appear satisfied, Stacy looks nervous. Break.
J.R. and he King return with some news that just plain sucks-we’re informed that WWE Hall of Famer ‘Classy’ Freddie Blassie passed away shortly before Raw went on the air.
We cut backstage-Bischoff and his co-General Manager Stone Cold Steve Austin chat about Bad Blood. They agree to engage in their own competition at the PPV, a ‘Redneck Triathlon’. No details as of yet.
Cut to Terri interviewing Goldberg. Before much of consequence can be said we see Chris Jericho on a video monitor pouring a can of yellow paint on Bill’s vintage Barracuda. Bill quickly runs to his car and drives off. Break.
Back, J.R. informs us that Goldberg is apparently hot on the trail of Chris Jericho. We’re also informed tonight’s Main Event will see The Hurricane, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels taking on HHH, Ric Flair and Randy Orton.
We get the poll results from WWE.com-65% of those voting feel J.R.’s book will be a hit.
Time for our ‘Highlight Reel’ segment-looks like Intercontinental Champion Christian is subbing for Y2J. He wastes no time inviting The Rock to join him in the ring. Rocky tries to do his ‘Finally…’ routine, is rudely interrupted by Christian, who describes himself as the new People’s Champion. War of words breaks out, Christian claims to have replaced Rocky in the hearts of the fans. People’s Champion decides to take the matter to the fans, he goes out into the crowd-very positive response. ‘If ya smell’ is interrupted when Chris Jericho makes his way to the ring, apparently having escaped Goldberg’s wrath. Rock re-enters, new verbal battle breaks out, Y2J smugly reminds Rocky that he scored a Spear on Goldberg last week. Chat continues, business picks up when Christian and Y2J launch an attack. Rock is beat down, Booker T arrives to make the save, Chris takes the People’s Elbow, Christian the Rock Bottom-then Rocky invites Booker to hit the Elbow on Christian! Offer is accepted, Canadians clear out, Booker and Rock share a handshake, then Booker asks for a Rock-aroonie. Booker demonstrates, Rocky does a decent imitation, crowd seems happy, we go to break.
(Commentary: 75 minutes, 2 short matches.)
Burn of the Night: From last week, Sylvan Grenier (less than cleanly) defeated co-holder of the World Tag Team Championships Rob Van Dam in a ‘flag match’ to earn himself and René Dupree a shot at Rob and Kane’s tag titles at Bad Blood.
In the back, Christian and Y2J tell Stone Cold they’re leaving the arena. Rattler quickly applies the kibosh.
Next up, Kane, with Rob Van Dam, goes one on one with René Dupree, who’s accompanied by Sylvan Grenier. Short match with tons of interference and blatant cheating, René gets the win with a roll-up after a low blow behind the ref’s back. René and Sylvan split as Stone Cold makes his way to the ring. RVD is quickly dismissed, Rattler verbally lays into Big Red, asks if ‘the fire still burns’. Stone Cold practically begs for a chokeslam, asks what happened to the guy that defeated him in a ‘First Blood’ title match a few years ago. More verbal abuse follows, Kane finally sets for the chokeslam, Austin yells ‘DO IT!’-Kane simply shoves him aside. Stone Cold disgustedly issues a Stunner and makes his exit as Kane looks on. Break.
(Commercial airs hyping the WWE debut of Gail Kim.)
Back, we get a replay of the Kane/Austin confrontation. J.R. and the King appear confused.
We cut backstage to see Hunter walking out of an office-door is simply labeled ‘Officials’.
J.R and the King go over the card for Bad Blood as it currently stands:
1. Bill Goldberg vs. Chris Jericho
2. Booker T challenges Christian for the Intercontinental title.
3. Sylvan Grenier and René Dupree challenge Rob Van Dam and Kane for the World Tag Team titles.
4. Test vs. Scott Steiner. Winner gets Stacy Keibler as a manager, exclusively.
5. Eric Bischoff vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin in a ‘Redneck Triathlon’.
6. Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels.
7. Kevin Nash challenges HHH for the World Championship in ‘Hell in a Cell’.
Cut to Hunter, Randy and Ric preparing for their upcoming match. Hunter not only feels that a win is in the bag, he appears confident his ‘Hell in a Cell’ match will end up being scrubbed. Randy wants elaboration, doesn’t get it.
We see Christian and Y2J on the way to the ring. J.R. informs us their opponents are to be Booker T and Goldust. Break.
When we return, King informs us of a new poll at WWE.com: ‘Was Stone Cold justified in stunning Kane?’
We go to the ring for Christian and Chris Jericho vs. Booker T and Goldust. Match barely begins when we go to break.
Back, tag match continues. Back and forth action, Booker picks up the win for his team, pinning Christian after the Scissors Kick. Post-match beatdown ensues, Chris uses the IC title belt as a weapon, referee Charles Robinson tries to take it from him as Goldberg runs into the ring. Spear is attempted, Y2J escapes by pushing Charles into Goldberg’s path. Canadians bail as Bill calls for medical help. Charles is put on a stretcher as we go to break.
J.R. and the King return to remind us that the Bad Blood PPV will be available free to active members of our armed forces. Details at WWE.com.
In the back, referees Earl Hebner, Jack Doan and Chad Patton talk to our co-General Managers. Boys in stripes are NOT happy about Charles being injured, they all refuse to officiate the Hell in a Cell match at Bad Blood-we’re reminded that Tim White was injured during the last HIAC and hasn’t refereed a match since. Stone Cold tells Earl to go prepare to ref tonight’s Main Event, he and his comrades split. Rattler informs Eric he knows someone crazy enough to referee the Bad Blood main event, he just needs to make a phone call. (Crowd breaks into a small ‘FOLEY’ chant.)
More poll results: 76% of those voting feel Austin was justified in issuing the Stunner to Kane.
Main event: HHH, Ric Flair and Randy Orton take on The Hurricane, Shawn Michaels and Kevin Nash. Hunter and co. make their separate entrances as we go to our final break.
Back, HBK, Big Kev and Hurricane join their opponents in the ring. Bell rings, messy disjointed match with a horrible ending. Hunter hit Hurricane with the Pedigree, Randy covered, Earl went to make the count-sure seemed to me Hurricane had his shoulder up, bell was called for regardless. Post-match Kevin hit Hunter with the jackknife powerbomb. End of show.
Short form match results (all victories by pinfall):
1. Trish Stratus, Ivory and Jacqueline defeated Victoria, Jazz and Molly Holly.
2. Scott Steiner defeated Steven Richards.
3. René Dupree defeated Kane.
4. Booker T and Goldust defeated Christian and Chris Jericho.
5. HHH, Ric Flair and Randy Orton defeated The Hurricane, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels.
