WWE Velocity TV Report for May 24, 2003
by Nathan Eckstrom
orangeman2000@mindspring.comBest Match: Funaki vs. Kanyon. Both guys looked good. Kanyon rammed Funaki's shoulder into the post and I'll talk more about that later, but it set up a neat spot here. As Funaki stayed in that position, hung up between the middle and top turnbuckles, Kanyon climbed up top, grabbed Funaki's legs and pulled back like a Boston Crab. A pretty cool looking move. We got a "Kanyon Sucks" chant from the crowd. Kanyon went a for a pin later and was pulling the tights. The ref saw it and stopped his count, which angered Kanyon. Kanyon went for the Flatliner, but Funaki elbowed his way out and then cradled Kanyon for the pin, pulling the tights as well. Kanyon was angered, again.
Worst Match: Rikishi vs. Phil Brown. This was the opener and went less than 2 minutes. Brown got knocked down and then tried to get Rikishi to shake hands. The crowd booed. That's nice. From there it went like this: Rikishi splashed Brown in the corner, gave him the Stinkface, superkicked him and then pinned him with the Banzai Drop. After the bell, the lights went out and Rikishi put on his hat and danced. I guess the live crowd likes it, but man is it ever useless on TV.
The Nilton: Mike Coughlin, this one's for you. After Bill DeMott hit a clothesline is his match, there was the following exchange - Cat: "What was that? A clothesline?" Josh: "Uh, yeah." Priceless. You couldn't write material like this if you tried. I guess the secret isn't writing, it's just not paying much attention, and The Cat's got that in spades.
Overview: Still photos and Cole/Tazz commentary of Brock vs. Show at Judgment Day started the show.....The intro and pyro ran and we've got good old Josh Matthews and The Cat announcing.....Rikishi vs. Phil Brown, see above.....Funaki interviewed Kanyon. Funaki talked about whatever it was Kanyon talked about the last time we saw him on TV. A monk from India who told Kanyon to find whoever is better than he is. Does anyone even remember that from the first time? A replay of Kanyon's match against Rhyno from that night was shown. Kanyon's foot was under the ropes as he was pinned, so Kanyon declared that Rhyno was not better than him. Funaki said everyone was better than Kanyon and then jumped around jubilantly. Kanyon walked, but then came right back and blindsided Funaki with a forearm. This set up Funaki vs. Kanyon for later.....Clips from Smackdown of the Zach Gowen interview.....Ad for the Rey Misterio DVD, which could be pretty good depending on what matches might be on there.....Funaki vs. Kanyon, see above.....Bill DeMott vs. Brad Hunter. DeMott tell a joke before the match. Who are the 3 most famous people to be shot in the back of the head? JFK, Abe Lincoln and the guy sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman. Oh, hilarious. While DeMott's laughing at his joke, Hunter punches him in the face. DeMott was back to some of his Hugh Morrus mannerism during this match, i.e. laughing in the ring, being kinda goofy, etc. Hunter got a nearfall after laying in some kicks. Hunter came off the top but got clothesline for a hard bump. This set up The Nilton. DeMott hits the Last Rites/Roll the Dice for the win.....Clips from Judgment Day of Piper vs. Mr. America.....Clips from Smackdown of the Vince/Piper/Mr. America segments and of the O'Haire vs. Mr. America match.....A-Train vs. Rhyno. Decent match. Rhyno has pretty good fire as a babyface that people respond to, although against A-Train a Shick razor would get that. Basic power moves and brawling from A-Train. Rhyno fights out of a bearhug by biting A-Train. Rhyno later gores A-Train through the ropes out to the floor. A-Train gets counted out and Rhyno wins. A-Train sold the Gore afterwards.
Comments: First off, Cat has to go right now. I've felt this way since he started and I'm confident that most anyone else who watches this show feels the same way. The fact that he's paid to do what he does on this show is just ridiculous. However, since more people outside WWE than inside WWE probably watch this show, what's going to be done about it?..... I don't know what to make of the Kanyon match. I mean, he was on one show and then it's a month before we see him again? And tonight he loses to Funaki, who held the tights no less. What else can be done to just totally cut off anything Kanyon could get going? I suppose he could get buried by Taker again. You know, only in today's WWE would a guy have the gimmick where he thinks that no one is better than he is and the booking philosophy then dictates that everyone is better. Even Funaki. I think Kanyon would be a lot happier back in OVW. He'd certainly be put to better use......About the spot where Funaki got his shoulder slammed into the post, I am so sick of that spot. It gets used in seemingly every match these days and never leads to anything. Not that anyone would buy it if it did because it's so overused, but still, enough is enough. If I never see it again it'll be too soon. It's just something else that makes almost every match look basically the same, and that's just killing WWE for me.....I was kinda put off by the finish to the Rhyno/A-Train match. A count out on Velocity? Come on. I can see that maybe it helped sell the Gore a bit, but there are other ways to do that without using such a lame finish. It's not like they're trying to protect Albert by not having him pinned, is it? Oh, that's a scary thought. I wish there was something more positive to comment on, but tonight's episode just didn't provide it.
Results: Rikishi d. Phil Brown; Funaki d. Kanyon; Bill DeMott d. Brad Hunter; Rhyno d. A-Train via count out
